Alf Ramsey and his England players didn't know it at the time but their 1-0 win over West Germany on Wednesday 23 February, 1966 turned out to be a great scouting mission ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
The win was notable for Geoff Hurst earning his first England cap and for Nobby Stiles scoring his first international goal.
